Bicycle Programs and Trainings
Project
Ride Smart
Provided for 4th, 5th, and 6th grades in schools, this curriculum provides bikes, helmets and instruction to assist youth in developing skills such as bike control, safety, awareness, rules of the road, and more. In 2009-2010 Westlake Charter, Heron School, and Natomas Park Elementary students are benefiting from our Project Ride Smart Program.
Freiker
(Frequent Biker: Automatic Counter) Coming Soon!
Solar powered computer counter installed at the entrances
of campus to automatically count bikers as they ride to school.
Students are awarded prizes as they accumulate trips ridden
to school.
May is Bike Month
As part of a regional campaign to challenge residents to
ride a million or more miles during the month of May, seven
schools in North Natomas challenge each other to see who
can ride the most trips. In 2009, six of our seven schools
ranked among the top ten schools in the region! For more information, visit
MayisBikeMonth.com.
Safety Education
Bike Rodeo
Skills and safety course for children using their bicycles
to maneuver around objects, become familiar with potential
hazards, and reinforce rules of the road. This Event is meant
to accompany a more comprehensive safety education program,
and is not recommended as a stand alone safety event. This
event is best suited as an after school community event
that may be paired with a helmet fitting and parent safety
workshop.
Pedestrian
Safety Instruction - For First, Second and Third Grades
– Coming Soon!
This safety instruction will focus on skill development and
awareness of how to cross at intersections and personal safety.
The program is designed to include led walks where children
can practice the skills they have learned.
Encouragement Programs and Promotions
Transit
Focused Field Trip – School Year 2010-2011
This field trip will be designed to give children first hand
experience on how to use various transportation options
to get themselves around. One or more tours can be included.
Parent and Community Workshops
How to Teach Your Child to Cycle
Thirty minute to one hour training based on the League of American
Bicyclist training, Kids 1. This informative presentation
educates parents on the correct messages and techniques to
use while teaching their children to ride and be safe.
Bike Fit and Tune
Did you know that a bicycle, like a pair of pants, can have
a right and a wrong fit? This event is designed to teach
children and parents what to look for in a properly fitted
bike, and what adjustments to make for a more comfortable
and safe ride. In addition, basic maintenance is performed.
This service may be paired with a larger event, like a bike
rodeo or helmet fitting, or may be a special addition to
another community event.
